A classic tomato sandwich is nothing more than soft bread, juicy tomatoes with salt, pepper and a little creamy mayonnaise. Perfection.
- They taste very good.
- They are the perfect simple food for slices of juicy Tomatoes.
- they are easy For a quick snack or light summer dinner.
Ingredients for tomato sandwiches
Tomatoes: Big sandwiches call for big tomatoes! I love heirloom tomatoes or beefsteak tomatoes, but honestly, any ripe, juicy variety works.
Bread: White bread is a classic for soaking up all the fresh tomato juice. Replace white bread with sourdough bread or thick slices of brioche.
Mayonnaise: Use a good quality mayonnaise such as Duke’s or Hellmanns mayonnaise.
Condiments: Sprinkle some salt and pepper, lemon pepper, or bagel seasoning over the tomatoes before assembling the tomato sandwich—anything goes!
Variations
You can add variations, but I think the best tomato sandwich is the one that is kept simple.
- Roasted tomatoes are juicy and delicious on toast.
- Tomatoes marinated in oil, vinegar and basil also make a tasty sandwich.
- Serve it open-faced on ricotta toast with a fried egg and a slice of bacon for a delicious breakfast, or turn it into a BLT.
- Add fresh basil, red onion, lettuce or cheese.
