For me, Halloween is about doing something really amazing with your makeup; As an artist, it gives me a moment to do it and be playful. Of course, if you’re a makeup artist, everyone wants you to do their makeup too! So if I have time, I have to start mine early before everyone else asks me for help. My advice is to choose a reference that you like and start from there. Last year that was Madonna for me; It doesn’t have to be scary, so watch your favorite movies and music videos and choose the looks you like.
Contact lenses are hard to put in (sometimes I want to give up after one!), but they make a difference, so be patient because they enhance your Halloween look. And it’s worth choosing an alternative style that you can always return to if you’re not feeling inspired. To me, that’s what a vampire is: add some fangs and some fake blood to finish your look and you’re done! I’m always a vampire of some description. In fact, all of the following styles could work on a vampire.
This Halloween, will you opt for a modern alien inspiration, a sleek AI robot, or something spookier? I’ve been scouring social media to find the most fun and expressive makeup looks for Halloween 2024. Which one will you recreate?
Halloween Makeup Tutorials for 2024
victorian vampire
Inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s 2011 runway makeup by Val Garland, this super chic take on a gothic vampire could be created just like Carol Barragana does in her tutorial, or with red instead of black for a statement touch.
AS?
Start with an all-white base and then use a fan brush and your choice of face paint color to create bold stripes from the mouth outward.

Alien chic
This Alien-inspired design can be recreated exactly as this artist does, or you can play with the colors and patterns to make your own mark.
AS?
Use a fine liner brush and face paint or cream eye color to create your design, working from the inner ear outward in a pattern toward one side of your face. Add a softer touch with a sultry smoky eye in a metallic finish or go hard with spooky contact lenses.

60’s model
If you prefer to be sexy rather than scary, try an ultra-feminine ’60s-print eyeliner to get the right size. If you want to make it scary, try adding blank contact lenses to complete the look.

Be a victim of a natural disaster and cause a storm with the easiest effects technique I’ve seen on Instagram this year.

Once you’ve perfected your foundation, apply a deep red eye color to a piece of crumpled aluminum foil and press it onto your cheek to leave your mark. Touch up with liquid eyeliner to create a perfect highlighting look.

Futuristic pin-up
If you want something classic but with a seasonal twist, I love this blue eye by Daniel Sallstrom for W Magazine.
AS?
Bring your blue shadow outward from beyond the eye area and use it along your hairline in the same places you would normally tan for a sunkissed finish. Finish with a blood red matte lip.

scorpion lips
Don’t you want a full look? Add a bold lined lip and make your Halloween pout perfect.
AS?
Use a transfer tattoo design to create this bold lip liner look, or if you’re feeling artistic, create a matte canvas and draw your own spider or scorpion lips with a waterproof liquid liner.

TOP TIP
This is the time to go all out and be experimental, don’t hesitate to dare. Once you’re happy with your look, set it with a setting spray. See the best ones in my edit here.
